IRWIN Racing’s Mark Winterbottom battled through the penultimate round of the BP Supercars All Stars ESeries with carnage aplenty at the high speed oval of Michigan International Speedway.
The second-to-last event of the breakthrough online racing series visited the high-speed speedway by virtue of a drivers vote. The qualifying format for the evening drew inspiration from the Daytona 500 with a time trial session followed by two heat races to set the grid for the first of three sprint races for the night.
Winterbottom started from 11th and avoided incident to finish eighth in his heat to start Race 27 of the ESeries from 16th alongside team mate Scott Pye.
Each race saw the field experience several wrecks as drivers struggled to avoid incidents ahead of them. Winterbottom finished the first two races in 23rd and 20th to start the final race on accrued points in 21st.
A strategy error saw him amongst six cars to pit twice in the final race when only one compulsory pit stop was required compared to two in the final race on previous nights. Winterbottom finished a lap down in 22nd.
The final round of the BP Supercars All Stars ESeries will be held next Wednesday June 10 at continues next Wednesday June 3 with Round 9 to be held at two familiar tracks to Frosty, the iconic Australian circuits of Mount Panorama and the closed-down Oran Park Raceway. “I seemed to just get caught up at the wrong place at the wrong time far too many times again tonight,” said Mark Winterbottom.
“It’s good when you’re in a battle but when someone has a moment and you lose a second it takes so long to catch back up with the pack racing.
“We thought the last race was a two stop race like every other night but that changed for tonight, so a comedy of errors to finish the night but thankfully no consequence.
“On a good note we’re one week closer to going real racing again!”
