Team 18 drivers Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye finished 12th and 19th respectively in the first race of the Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Winterbottom made a good start from 16th and made up two positions on the opening lap before he stopped on Lap 10. He was up to 11th once the field cleansed after the pit stop cycle, before losing a spot to Slade on fresher tyres with three laps remaining to take the chequered flag in 12th.
Pye started 18th and struggled for balance on his first stint with a damaged front right tyre as the laps went on. Pye stopped on Lap 20 and showed improved pace in his last stint to close up to the cars in front to finish 19th.
Team 18 will hit the track tomorrow for back-to-back qualifying from 10:30am, before Race 21 at 12:45pm and Race 22 at 4:25pm AEDT.
All the action can be viewed live on free-to-air on Channel 7 as well as Fox Sports, and also available on the 7Plus and Kayo streaming services. Check your local guides for further details.
Mark Winterbottom – driver #18 IRWIN Racing Holden ZB Commodore
“We moved forward in the race up to 12th so that’s a positive.
“Our race pace was reasonable but following cars was really tough as the race went on.
“We lost a bit of ground in our stop but overall we’ve still got some pace to find to challenge further up tomorrow.
“We’ll do some work overnight and aim to qualify further up the grid and have another crack tomorrow.”
Scott Pye – driver #20 DEWALT Racing Holden ZB Commodore
“We qualified disappointingly in 18th, then in the race we tried to go long with our strategy but had a damaged tyre late in our first stint.
“The car speed was pretty good after the stop and we closed the gap to the guys in front but unfortunately it was too late in the race to capitalise on it.
“It’s great that we don’t have any damage so we can back up early tomorrow morning, but we need to give it a tune up overnight and make sure we qualify better tomorrow.”
