DEWALT Racing’s Scott Pye stormed through from 13th to sixth in Race 26 on Saturday at the BP Ultimate Sydney SuperSprint, as IRWIN Racing’s Mark Winterbottom also moved forwards to 13th.
Pye and Winterbottom qualified 13th and 17th respectively for the 32-lap race after not making it through to the final phase of knockout qualifying.
Both drivers narrowly avoided chaos on the opening lap and moved forward a couple of spots before the pit stop window opened.
Winterbottom pitted early on Lap 6 for two tyres, while Pye stopped seven laps later and took on four tyres.
Winterbottom was looking strong in eighth place before a safety car was called on Lap 19 which bunched the field up, with Scott sitting in 12th and hoping to capitalise on a fresh set of rubber.
Pye charged through to sixth place by the chequered flag, picking off Hazelwood, Mostert and Davison in the process.
Winterbottom drove well to hang on to finish 13th as those on newer tyres came through at the end.
Team 18 returns to the track tomorrow for Races 27 and 28 of the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship from 2:10pm and 4:45pm respectively, live on Fox Sports and Kayo.
Scott Pye, driver – #20 DEWALT Racing Holden ZB Commodore
Race 26: Started 13th, Finished 6th
“I’m happy with P6 today, on days when you don’t have the fastest car its important to get some good points and we certainly did that today.
“Good strategy, we pitted late and took four tyres and then there was a late safety car
“The race went our way so I was stoked to come away with P6. Our third top ten result in two weekends and we’ve got two more chances tomorrow, so hopefully we can do more of the same.”
Mark Winterbottom, driver – #18 IRWIN Racing Holden ZB Commodore
Race 26: Started 17th, Finished 13th
“I need a change of luck at the moment.
“We pitted early, put two tyres on and were looking for a top seven or eight finish pretty comfortably before the safety car, then everyone put tyres on towards the end and came through
“The kerb strike in qualifying wasn’t ideal but we have a reasonable race car which is encouraging.
“We had a pretty clean race, a couple of bangs and bruises on the car, but we’ve got a strong race car so we’ll work on our setup tonight and go again tomorrow.”
