Team 18 showed top-ten pace during practice for the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Friday’s running saw two on-track sessions. The first session was purely for co-drivers with a 40-minute additional drivers session, before Practice 1 for the main drivers held under lights.

In the additional drivers session, DEWALT Racing co-driver James Golding and IRWIN Racing co-driver Michael Caruso placed 18th and 19th on the timesheets.

Both cars worked through a specific testing program focussing on providing date for the remainder of the weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park and ensuring both drivers are familiar with the team’s processes before the Bathurst 1000 in two weeks time.

Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye hopped back in their cars for Practice 1 under lights on Friday evening. Winterbottom posted the ninth fastest time in the session and was reasonably pleased with the balance of the car. Pye ran through a similar program before his fastest lap attempt was hampered by a yellow flag and slowing traffic.

Team 18 returns to the track tomorrow for Race 29 of the Repco Supercars Championship at 7:10pm AEDT, live on Channel 7, Fox Sports and Kayo.

Mark Winterbottom, driver – #18 IRWIN Racing Holden ZB Commodore
Practice 1: 9th (1:30.7305)

“It’s hard at night time because the conditions change the balance of the car quite a bit, but we had top-ten pace then with a pretty good lap, but we still need to find a fair bit to progress up the grid.

“It’s hard to gauge, it was a one-lap run tonight versus a whole stint tomorrow night, but night time running definitely helps the tyre degradation. Add in super softs and the potential for weather, there’s a bit to unfold between now and tomorrow night.”

Scott Pye, driver – #20 DEWALT Racing Holden ZB Commodore
Practice 1: 23rd (1:31.4809)

“The car doesn’t feel too bad so we’ll do some work overnight and go again tomorrow but we didn’t get our best lap in due to traffic and a yellow flag.

James Golding, Co-driver – #20 DEWALT Racing Holden ZB Commodore
Additional Drivers Session: 18th (1:32.2936)

“We had a bit of a plan before that session with a few things we wanted to tick off, we just focussed on ourselves and ticked off the boxes and made sure I felt comfortable in the car.

“We don’t really know where our times were at as everyone is on different tyres and strategies, but we ticked off the boxes we needed to and felt comfortable in the car which is the main thing.”

Michael Caruso, Co-driver – #18 IRWIN Racing Holden ZB Commodore
Additional Drivers Session: 19th (1:32.5417)

“Good to get back in the car and get some laps. It was my first time since May so it’s been a while between drinks. It was good to work with the guys and get comfortable, we’re only a couple of weeks away from Bathurst so looking forward to it.

“We got to run on both the softs and hards and hopefully we generated enough data for the rest of the weekend and hope the team have a good round before we all get up to the mountain.”
