The 2021 Cash Converters Supercars ESeries ended last night with the sixth and final round of the championship.
IRWIN Racing’s Cooper Webster finished 11th in the Pro series at the Hungaroring, while DEWALT Racing’s Scott Pye and wildcard Tom Schwerkolt crashed out in the All Stars at Watkins Glen.
In the Pro ESeries, Webster qualified in 12th and got off to a clean start and avoided a couple of incidents ahead of him on a chaotic opening lap.
Webster drove a longer first stint before pitting on Lap 7 and rejoined the field in 12th position. He pressured Brady Meyers in the closing stages and got by for 11th place on the last lap.
In the All Stars race, Pye qualified in 15th while Schwerkolt started 29th from the 31 drivers.
Unfortunately, Pye found trouble on the opening lap when he came across a stricken car across the track and had a lengthy pit stop for repairs. Pye circulated towards the back for the remainder of the race, eventually taking the chequered flag in 29th position.
Schwerkolt avoided the carnage and moved into the top 20 early on, before he too was caught up in a crash and finished back in 30th place.
The final points standings saw Webster finish 11th in the Pro ESeries for IRWIN Racing, while Pye finished the All Stars ESeries in 17th place for DEWALT Racing.
Attention now turns towards the return to real-life Supercars action when the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship resumes under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park on 29-31 October.
RESULTS & QUOTES
Scott Pye, All Stars ESeries driver – #20 DEWALT Racing Holden Commodore
Qualifying: 15th, Race 6: 29th, Championship: 17th
“It was a huge field tonight, we qualified about mid-field so it was always going to be difficult to stay out of trouble,” said Scott Pye.
“I made it most of the first lap and the unfortunately there was a crash on the exit of the bus-stop and a car came rolling back across the front of the track so I couldn’t avoid them.
“There was a bit of a glitch where my car was stuck to the fence, so I had to get a tow back to the pit lane which cost us some time, so I was a lap down after the first lap. We got the wave around during the safety car period, but the safety car wasn’t out for long enough to catch back up to the field before the restart.
“It was disappointing not to be in the fight at the end, I think we were pretty quick around this track, but it wasn’t to be in the end as it was all over after Lap 1.
“We had a great time back on the twitch, and huge thanks to all my partners that have come onboard with giveaways for the subscribers of the twitch stream, that’s what it was really about. I’ve got the twitch bug again, so I’d like to keep up the twitch engagement and do some live videos when we return to racing.
“The support was very similar to last year, the last six weeks have been fantastic and it’s been great to see the racing community get together and have a laugh during a tough time.”
Cooper Webster, Pro ESeries driver – #18 IRWIN Racing Holden Commodore
Qualifying: 12th, Race 6: 11th, Championship: 11th
“Qualifying was ok, but I had some wheel-spin off the start which hurt my run in to Turn 1, but we managed to get through the incidents on the first lap.
“I went with the strategy of going a bit longer on the first stint to try something different to everyone else, but it didn’t really pay off and I lost a bit of time coming out of the pits.
“I made a good move on the last lap to gain one more position on a car that came out in front of me earlier.
“Overall it was an alright season, I feel I could have done better in some areas but we had some strong results as well.
“Racing in the ESeries for Team 18 was a really awesome opportunity, it was great to meet everyone at the factory including Scott and Frosty, and I was proud to represent the IRWIN Racing colours in the virtual world.”
Tom Schwerkolt, ESeries wildcard driver – #18 IRWIN Racing Holden Commodore
Qualifying: 29th, Race 6: 30th
“I loved being a part of the final round of the Supercars ESeries, it was a great night!” said Schwerkolt.
“I thought it was going to be a tough race, I had a plan to get through the first corner safely and hoped that everyone was going to crash in front and I’d pick up some positions.
“Dad called me straight after the race and he was happy where I ended up and that I finished the race, it was so much fun.”
“It was awesome working with Scott [Pye] and talking to some of the other Supercar drivers and our engineers through practice and the race.
“It’s amazing how much those guys know about racing and how it translates to the sim, it was cool to learn from them and they were a great help.”
