Team 18 Owner Charlie Schwerkolt has announced Scott Pye will join his expanding Supercar team next year following his purchase of a second Racing Entitlements Contract for the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.
Pye will partner with Mark Winterbottom who will continue to drive the IRWIN Racing Number 18 Holden Commodore, with both cars to be based out of the team garage in Mount Waverley, Victoria.
“I am really excited to be joining Team 18 in 2020, they’re a young team but at the same time they have already had a taste of success, and it’s refreshing to see what they have been able to achieve so far. I was immediately excited by the opportunity and I could see it would be a good fit for me. I am looking forward to working alongside Charlie, Mark and the rest of the team, to help them grow and move us to the front of the grid. Charlie’s intentions are very clear, and he is extremely motivated, so it will be great to be part of the team working together for one goal.” – Scott Pye
Beginning his full-time Supercars career in 2013 with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, Pye has also driven with Dick Johnson Racing and will conclude his time at Walkinshaw Andretti United at the Supercars season finale in Newcastle at the end of this month.
The 29-year-old’s breakthrough win came at the Australian Grand Prix Melbourne 400 in 2018, the same year he claimed his second consecutive runner-up position in the Bathurst 1000 and finished 7th in the Supercars Championship.
Pye is currently 14th in the 2019 Supercars Championship Standings, 33 points behind Winterbottom in 13th.
Schwerkolt is relishing in the opportunity to add another experienced driver to his team amid the step-up to becoming a two-car team in 2020.
“It’s a massive step to expand Team 18 to a two car operation next year and I think Scott Pye is the right person to get the job done for all our partners and crew at Team 18. Scott’s ability on-track is on the way up in the prime of his career and I’m confident the best is yet to come. He will make a great teammate for Frosty and we’re really excited to have him join the team in 2020 and beyond.” – Charlie Schwerkolt
Team 18 is yet to confirm the major sponsor for the second car.
