Steve Richards has announced that he will take a step back from racing in the Supercars Championship to take up a role as Relationship Manager at Team 18.
Richards has has 460 race starts in the Supercars Championship with 10 race wins, 5 of those at the Bathurst 1000, and a total of 35 podiums.
The Bathurst Champion drove alongside Mark Winterbottom in the 2019 Enduro Cup where the duo’s highest result was P6 at Bathurst and finished 10th overall across the three races.
Richards move into a fill-time role with the team comes after Team Owner, Charlie Schwerkolt, announced that Team 18 will expand to a two-car team with Scott Pye signed as the second driver alongside Mark Winterbottom.
Richards said his decision was not one made lightly, but believes it will future proof Team 18 in the long term and is looking forward to taking up a new role in his Motorsport career.
“I’ve been in discussion with Charlie and the team regarding an active role for some time. It’s an exciting time at Team 18 and now is the right time to make this decision. I’ll be able to utilize my experience to assist Charlie and the team drive success both on and off the track and work closely with the incredible team partnerships that have been established. I’ve had a fantastic career in Supercars, winning races, competing for Championships, and driving with the best teams and drivers in the most competitive Touring car Championship in the world. While I close the door on Supercars I’ll still have some flexibility to continue driving in other categories.” – Steve Richards
“Really sad day for us to announce Richo is hanging up the helmet on his Supercars career, but his move into the management and commercial side of Team 18 will be great future proofing for the team. We have been chatting about this for a while when Richo first joined the team at the start of the year, but now with the expansion to a two-car operation, the role has really progressed into a full time role. Richo has extensive motorsport knowledge and is a massive get for our team to have someone of his calibre that can guide and assist all Team 18 properties. Really really proud to have him on board!” – Charlie Schwerkolt
Team 18 will announce their co-drivers for Mark Winterbottom and Scott Pye in the coming weeks.
Team 18 will now prepare for the Superloop Adelaide 500 for Round 1 of the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, to be held on 28 February – 3 March with all races to be televised LIVE on Fox Sports.
