2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship

Mark Winterbottom has finished P15 and P10 at the Ipswich SuperSprint for Round 9 of the Supercars Championship.

Race 19 – Position 15

Winterbottom began Race 19 from P16 after failing to advance to Q2 in the Qualifying format by just 0.06 of a second.

Dropping into P17 on the race start, Winterbottom spent his first stint in a battle pack but remained in the same position.

One of the first to take his only stop of the 39-lap race, Winterbottom headed in for fuel and tyres and rejoined in P23, which was promoted to P16 once every car had stopped.

Winterbottom was able to climb into P15 before the chequered flag and was happy to have a straight car following the race but reported struggles with pace.

“We had a good start and we had a good strategy, but just struggled for pace. We didn’t fall completely off the cliff but lost a couple of spots in the happy-medium period. Would love to be further up, but when you qualify that position, you’re kinda there for a reason. Parc-ferme meant we couldn’t touch the car, but at least it’s straight, and we can go again tomorrow!”

Race 20 – Position 10

A red flag late in Sunday’s Qualifying Q1 bracket meant that Winterbottom didn’t have the chance to set a second lap and began Race 20 from P17.

By Lap 11 of 69, Winterbottom advanced to P14 before taking his first stop on Lap 22 and rejoining in P20.

Winterbottom was the last to then take his second stop from P1, rejoined in P15 and was able to pass several cars to finish P10 for the final race of the weekend.

Winterbottom was happy to finish inside the ten and has remained 14th in the Supercars Championship Standings.

“Great to end the weekend with a top 10! We were able to make the car better across the weekend and have a good race! Can’t thank the team enough, they worked countless hours this weekend, and I’m so lucky to have them.”
