Team 18 Owner Charlie Schwerkolt has announced he is expanding his Supercar team with the purchase of a second Racing Entitlements Contract (REC) for the 2020 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship.
A REC is required to enter a full-time car in the championship and also represents an equity stake in the Supercars business.
Schwerkolt’s original Number 18 REC is run under the IRWIN Racing banner and driven by Mark Winterbottom who is currently 12th in the Championship Standings and 7th in the Pirtek Enduro Cup with co-driver Steve Richards.
The second car operation will be run out of the team garage in Mount Waverley, located behind Schwerkolt’s Waverley Forklift’s head office.
Purchasing his second REC from the downsized Kelly Racing, Schwerkolt is excited to see his small team grow.
“I’m really excited to be able to share that we will be growing Team 18 into a two-car operation in 2020,” Schwerkolt said of the expansion.
“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while now, I feel that the timing is right for the whole team and I’m really excited to have two cars on track and two garages in pit lane next year.”
Team 18 is yet to confirm a driver or major sponsor for the second car.
IRWIN Racing will now prepare for the Gold Coast 600 for Round 12 of the 2019 Supercars Championship, to be held on 25 – 27 October with all races to be televised LIVE on Fox Sports.
