Mark Winterbottom & Steve Richards have finished P6 at the Bathurst 1000 for Round 12 of the Supercars Championship.
Race 25 – Position 7
Winterbottom qualified for the Top Ten Shootout after finishing P9 in Qualifying, but on his solo lap around Mount Panorama he had two lock-ups and finished P10.
The Race start was delayed due to a wildcard driver sustaining carbon dioxide poisoning from a cool box failure on the formation lap.
Beginning the Great Race from the 5th Row, Winterbottom moved into P9 before taking his first stop and swapping driving duties with Richards who rejoined in P18.
By the halfway mark of the Race, Richards had moved into P8 following a brake rotor change, tyre and fuel stop.
Winterbottom jumped back into #18 for his second stint and moved into P9 before handing the reigns back to Richards who rejoined the Race in P13.
Just prior to the 100-lap mark, Richards finished his final stint at Bathurst for 2019 and swapped back with Winterbottom who rejoined the Race in P16.
After the first 100 laps that featured brilliant racing and minimal accidents, a crash sparked a thrilling stop-start run home that would include 7 safety cars before the final flag.
Winterbottom stopped 3 more times for fuel under Safety Cars before the end of the Race and raced into P8, advancing to P7 as a driver ahead crashed into the wall with 3 laps remaining.
Crossing the finish line in P7 with a straight car, Winterbottom & Richards were happy with the result but reported struggling with pace in the Number 18 car.
Winterbottom has moved up from 13th to 12th in the Supercars Championship Standings and the IRWIN Racing duo is 7th in the Pirtek Enduro Cup Standings.
UPDATE: IRWIN Racing’s Bathurst Race Result is now one position higher as the CAMS investigation into DJR Team Penske’s FIA rules breach is finalised.
“We battled all day, we weren’t the quickest car by any means but we fought hard. P7 is fantastic, the guys did a really good job and the result is a good team effort. The car is alright but we need to find pace, top ten at Bathurst is a good but we just need to make the car a bit faster and it should all click.” – Mark Winterbottom
“What a day, we struggled for balance all day really trying to have the car fast enough. The guys did absolutely everything they could to try and make the car better but all weekend it’s had an inherent trait that we haven’t been able to nail out. It’s a shame but that result is fantastic. P7 isn’t what we came here for but considering how the car is performance was it is a great result.” – Steve Richards
IRWIN Racing will now prepare for the Gold Coast 600 for Round 12 of the 2019 Supercars Championship, to be held on 25 – 27 October with all races to be televised LIVE on Fox Sports.
