Mark Winterbottom has finished P4 and P6 at the Tasmania SuperSprint for Round 3 of the Supercars Championship.
Race 7 – Position 4
Winterbottom finished P4 in Friday afternoon’s Practice 3, meaning he advanced into the Q2 session on Saturday.
Winterbottom advanced into Q3 in the Qualifying elimination format and in his third event with Team 18, took the first ever pole for the team and his first pole in exactly 1,000 days with a time of 50.6920s, 0.004s ahead of McLaughlin.
Starting from P1 on the Grid, Winterbottom had a tough start to the 50 Lap Race, dropping a position due to an engine cough.
Winterbottom held out Coulthard until just before the half-way point of the Race when coincidentally mirroring the laters strategy, pitting on Lap 20 and rejoining behind Coulthard in P16.
Once the remainder of the field had taken their stop, Winterbottom was in P3 but was held up by the Wildcard entry and Van Gisbergen was able to grab the last spot on the podium with fresher tyres.
Winterbottom finished P4, the team’s best result, equal with their P4 finish at Newcastle in 2017.
“Really cool to get the teams first pole position. I’m really proud of everyone, I feel like we’ve got a good team and we are building towards something great. We were close but not close enough in Race 1, we struggled with tyre degradation but battled on. Had a tough start when the engine coughed and lost a spot to McLaughlin, I held out Coulthard but we mirrored him in strategy and lost a spot coming out of the Pits. SVG came late with fresh tyres and the lapped wild card entry held us up so we couldn’t hold him off for a podium.” – Mark Winterbottom
Race 8 – Position 6
Winterbottom had a great start to the 84-lap Race on Sunday, moving to P3 on the opening laps and setting a new Race lap record, 51.2276s, on the second lap of the Race.
Pitting from P3, Winterbottom rejoined in P11 and blasted through the battle pack of Waters, Courtney and De Pasquale for P5.
Taking his second stop from P5, Winterbottom had to settle for a P6 finish after Whincup beat him at the pit exit when rejoining.
As a result of the positive weekend, Winterbottom has now moved from 10th to 7th in the overall Championship Standings.
“Not a bad result today, we got the fastest lap and new record which was pretty cool. Had a couple of little issues that held us back a bit but had a great weekend with P4, P6 and Pole, we’ll race again in a week’s time but the best results we’ve had at the team so far and positive times ahead.” – Mark Winterbottom
IRWIN Racing will now prepare for the Phillip Island SuperSprint for Round 4 of the 2019 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, to be held on 12 – 14 April with all races to be televised LIVE on Fox Sports.
